Several genetic factors are assumed to influence developmental instability (DI). One is the level of heterozygosity, with higher levels often being associated with decreased DI; another is genetic incompatibility in hybrids, which in several cases has been shown to increase DI. The genus Bacillus includes species which have both amphigonic heterozygous reproducing populations and homozygous parthenogenetic reproducing populations (B. rossius rossius and B. r. redtenbacheri). Furthermore, Bacillus includes hybrid parthenogenetic species, which have very high levels of almost fixed heterozygosities (B. atticus, B. whitei, B. lynceorum). We investigated the phenotypic variance (σ2p) and the impact of hybridization and level of heterozygosity on DI in females from these populations and species of Bacillus. DI was estimated as fluctuating asymmetry (FA) for three bilateral traits: the labial palpus, the maxillary palpus and the antenna. For the labial palpus and maxillary palpus we found, in general, a lower level of DI in the amphigonic females compared with parthenogenetic counterparts from the same species and with parthenogenetic females from the three hybrid species. A higher DI of the antenna was found in the hybrid species when compared with both parthenogenetic and amphigonic populations of the nonhybrid species, suggesting that the genes controlling antenna development are located on the sex chromosomes. The development of the investigated bilateral characters in the hybrid species seemed to be affected more by factors relating to genetic incompatibilities as a consequence of hybridization than by the stabilizing force of increased heterozygosity. Only few differences in σ2p were observed, supporting the possibility that the observed differences in DI are related mainly to internal genetic factors. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2006, 87 , 249–259.  相似文献

A craniometric and molecular genetic investigation was conducted in Danish stoat (Mustela erminea) and weasel (Mustela nivalis) populations. Specimens used were collected over a wide time span (stoat: 1864–2002; weasel: 1863–1990) and from several geographical regions (Jutland peninsula and the two islands of Funen and Zealand). The study was made with a temporal and a spatial perspective, allowing the estimation of differences in genetic diversity and craniometrical trait means between geographical regions and through time with the use of ancient DNA techniques. Univariate statistics of 11 trait lengths did not reveal geographical differentiation in size and shape among the different regions for the stoat, but a geographical differentiation in shape was found for the weasel. There was evidence for reductions in skull size with the year of collection in male stoats, but not in females, which suggests that some selective pressures or environmental factors have affected male stoats to a greater extent than female stoats and the weasel. Relatively high values of heterozygosity were found in both the stoat and weasel, using microsatellite markers. The level of genetic variability of the stoat collected recently was compared with the level of genetic variability in the historical samples, demonstrating that the stoat has not suffered severe loss of genetic variability through the investigated period. A comparison of recent and historical genetic variability of the weasel was not possible because the ancient DNA extracted from the weasels was too degraded. Pairwise FST values and assignment tests showed small but significant genetic differentiation between the different geographical regions for both the stoat and weasel. No genetic differentiation between the recent and historical samples of the stoat was found. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2006, 88 , 541–553.  相似文献

The ability to express heat‐shock proteins (HSP) under thermal stress is an essential mechanism for ectotherms to cope with unfavourable conditions. In this study, we investigate if Copper butterflies originating from different altitudes and/or being exposed to different rearing and induction temperatures show differences in HSP70 expression. HSP70 expression increased substantially at the higher rearing temperature in low‐altitude butterflies, which might represent an adaptation to occasionally occurring heat spells. On the other hand, high‐altitude butterflies showed much less plasticity in response to rearing temperatures, and overall seem to rely more on genetically fixed thermal stress resistance. Whether the latter indicates a higher vulnerability of high‐altitude populations to global warming needs further investigation. HSP70 expression increased with both colder and warmer induction temperatures.  相似文献

Resistance to a short term exposure to a high temperature stress was examined in eggs, larvae and pupae of Drosophila buzzfltii from seven localities. Across development, pupae were most resistant, followed by eggs, and then first and third-instar larvae. Variation among populations for resistance to heat stress was significant in all life stages. However, there was much less variation among populations where measured as eggs and pupae than for both first and third instar larvae. Older larvae showed large changes both in viability and developmental time, while exposure of young larvae to heat stress led to a decline in viability without delayed development. Populations that had the shortest developmental time at 25oC were relatively the most resistant to heat stress as larvae. High relative resistance at one preadult life stage was not necessarily associated with relatively high resistance at another, or with previous measurements of resistance for adults from these populations. Comparison of populations that were more similar in their pattern of change in resistance across development suggested a relationship with the climate of origin. The possibility that developmental variation in the expression of heat shock proteins may cause variation in resistance to thermal stress for different life stages is discussed.  相似文献

The compositions of terpenoids from the seed cones and resins of selected fossil and modern species of pine ( Pinus , Pinaceae) were analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to study the preservation of chemosystematic markers (biomarkers) in fossil conifers. Diterpenoids of the abietane, pimarane, isopimarane, and labdane types are the major components in the solvent extracts of all fossil and extant pines. Mono- and sesquiterpenoids of the bornane and cadalane classes and two phytosterols were also identified. The terpenoid patterns of the fossil species largely match the terpenoids observed in modern pines. The characteristic features of the fossil and extant Pinus species are abietane-, pimarane-, and isopimarane-type diterpenoids with a high abundance of abietic acids. Several biomolecules were preserved unaltered in the Eocene and Oligocene pine cones. In addition to the biomolecules, the fossil pines contain a series of degradation products (geomolecules) that were generated from their biological precursors before and after burial. The generation of the geomolecules is governed by various oxidative and reductive processes, such as microbial degradation and clay catalysis. In conclusion, the comparative analysis of solvent-extractable biomarkers in fossil and related extant species is a valuable tool for (palaeo)chemosystematic studies of conifers.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 154 , 129–140.  相似文献

Five microsatellite markers were obtained from a dinucleotide enriched genomic library of the stick insect Bacillus rossius rossius. The markers were tested in three species of Bacillus. All loci were polymorphic when tested across species. The number of alleles at each locus was low (maximum four alleles), but different allelic patters were observed among the species.  相似文献

The development of an expressed sequence tag (EST) collection for the poplar pathogen Septoria musiva presented an opportunity for the development of locus‐specific polymorphic markers. Five microsatellites simple sequence repeat (SSR) and six polymerase chain reaction (PCR)–restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers were identified and tested on three S. musiva populations collected in the north‐central and northeastern regions of North America. The results obtained support previously published random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) data.  相似文献

Inbreeding is expected to increase the variability in size and shape within populations. The distinct effects of inbreeding on size and shape suggest that they are governed by different developmental pathways. One unresolved question is whether the non‐allometric shape component is partially unconstrained developmentally and therefore whether shape is evolvable. In the present study, we utilized a mass outbred population of Drosophila melanogaster maintained at standard laboratory conditions. Eight lines with equivalent expected levels of inbreeding (F ≈ 0.67) were obtained by restricting the size of each population to two pairs for nine generations. Nine landmarks were measured on Drosophila wings of the inbreed lines and compared with those of the mass population. Wing landmarks comprise an excellent model system for studying evolution of size and shape. Landmark measurements were analyzed with a Procrustes generalized least squares procedure. To visualize global shape changes among samples, we reconstructed the mean shape and the shape changes related to both the allometric and non‐allometric components. An increased variability in the non‐allometric shape component was found with inbreeding. This indicated that shape was not entirely developmentally constrained, and therefore that shape appears to be evolvable. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 102 , 626–634.  相似文献

Variation in three life‐history traits (developmental time, preadult viability and daily female productivity) and five morphometrical traits (thorax length, wing length, wing width, wing/thorax ratio and wing‐aspect ratio) was studied at three developmental temperatures (20, 25 and 30 °C) in Drosophila buzzatii and Drosophila simulans collected on the island of La Gomera (Canary Archipelago). The flies originated from five closely situated localities, representing different altitudes (from 20 to 886 m above sea level) and a range of climatic conditions. We found statistically significant population effects for all traits in D. buzzatii and for most of the traits in D. simulans. Although no correlations of trait values with altitude were detected, geographical patterns for three life‐history traits and body size in D. buzzatii indicated that short‐range geographical variation in this species could be maintained by local climatic selection. Five of eight traits showed population‐by‐temperature interactions either in D. buzzatii or in D. simulans, but in all cases except wing width in D. buzzatii this could not be interpreted as adaptive responses to thermal conditions in the localities. The range of plastic changes across temperatures for particular traits differed between species, indicating a possibility for different levels of environmental stress experienced by the natural populations. The reaction norm curves and the response of within‐population variability to thermal treatments suggested better adaptations to higher and lower temperatures for D. buzzatii and D. simulans, respectively. The levels of among‐population differentiation depended on developmental temperature, implying environmental effects on the expression of the genetic variance. At 20 and 25 °C, interpopulation variability in D. buzzatii was higher than in D. simulans, while at 30 °C the opposite trend was observed. © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2005, 84 , 119–136.  相似文献

The recent quantification of changes in time series of phenology data with Bayesian methods has provided compelling evidence for changes during the last 20 years. In this paper we correlate the phenological observations with spring temperature time series. We provide quantitative answers to the question whether changes in temperature and phenological time series should be regarded as coherent or independent. For the three considered species snowdrops, cherry and lime tree we find factors of 1.05, 2.19 and 3.26, respectively, in favor of coherence. The functional behavior and the trend in the temperature time series are presented. They amount to 0.15°C yr?1 for the January–March average, 0.09°C yr?1 for February–April and 0.1°C yr?1 for March–May in 2002. In addition, we compare blossom trends for the coherent and independent hypotheses and find that the transition from trend values slightly positive before 1970 to strongly negative at present becomes sharper as the temperature data are included in the analysis.  相似文献
